A photographic essay of Edinburgh and Florence.

As Guy Debord and the Situationist International demonstrated to us fifty years ago, our understanding of cities is never as a coherent urban fabric, a totality, but is always physic, psychic, and fragmentary. The material gets in the way, the ideal of the city is never reached.

This essay of fifty fragments of Florence and fifty fragments of Edinburgh was an attempt to reach an understanding of these very similar cities beyond conventional, planimetric, historic and administrative means; to undertake a study in peripheral vision.

Photography, the common currency of the modern urban traveller was used as a technique to undermine the acculturated identity of these instantly recognisable urban environments - a tool to turn the urban familiar into the urban strange, allowing us to look again with fresh eyes.
